Rural Community Action Ministry (RCAM) continues to play a vital role in strengthening the financial stability of individuals and families across rural Kennebec County. For more than fifty years, the organization has evolved from its origins as a minister-led community initiative into a mission-driven nonprofit committed to alleviating poverty and meeting basic needs. Today, RCAM remains deeply attuned to emerging community needs and continues to expand its services to ensure that residents in Litchfield, Monmouth, Wayne, and surrounding rural towns have access to the resources that support long-term stability.
RCAM offers a robust set of financial-stability supports designed to help clients maintain housing, avoid crisis, and build toward greater independence. Its Homeless Prevention services include access to several shelters and financial assistance for expenses such as rent, mortgage payments, utilities, fuel, and vehicle insurance—critical supports for individuals living paycheck to paycheck. RCAM also provides one-on-one financial and self-sufficiency counseling, helping clients strengthen budgeting skills, understand credit, and access the benefits and resources they qualify for. For seniors and people with disabilities, volunteer-driven transportation ensures access to essential appointments, including physical and behavioral health care that supports overall stability.
Looking ahead, RCAM is actively planning several initiatives that will further strengthen financial resilience across the region. The organization intends to deepen collaborations with WIC to offer healthy cooking classes connected to its Community Gardening Program—an effort that reduces food costs for families while promoting nutritious meals. RCAM is also exploring expanded transportation services and more coordinated approaches to supporting clients with mental health and substance-use challenges, recognizing the strong link between well-being and financial stability. Internally, staff are reviewing their education and employment strategies to identify additional ways to support clients as they pursue job training, credentials, and long-term career goals.
Through its comprehensive services and commitment to addressing barriers faced by rural residents, RCAM continues to advance financial stability not only for its clients, but for the broader Kennebec County community.
