Impact2032 Spotlight: Legal Services for Maine Elders

Legal Services for Maine Elders (LSE) continues to play a vital role in promoting financial stability for older adults and the broader community in Kennebec County. As a nonprofit legal aid organization dedicated to the well-being of low-income older Mainers, LSE works to ensure that older adults have access to the resources, support, and protections they need to live safely and independently.

In addition to its core services, LSE supports education and workforce development by participating in a statewide elder abuse essay contest with schools, offering mentorship and internship opportunities, and occasionally providing paid time off for staff pursuing further education.

At the heart of their mission is a commitment to ensuring that Maine’s elders are financially secure. LSE provides direct legal assistance to help clients understand and access public benefits such as Social Security, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Medicare. The organization also works to protect older people from housing instability, offering support to prevent eviction and maintain safe, affordable living conditions. These services are essential in a region in which finding new housing after eviction is often extremely difficult.

Beyond direct service, LSE actively participates in public policy advocacy aimed at strengthening income supports and expanding housing subsidies for older Mainers. Through this combined focus on individual support, education, and systemic change, LSE continues to serve as a cornerstone of financial stability for Kennebec County’s aging population and the broader community.
