For nearly eight years, the Waterville Area Essentials Closet has been a vital resource for individuals and families in Kennebec County, providing much-needed hygiene and personal care items. As it approaches its anniversary on April 17, 2025, the pantry continues to serve over 3400 households, representing over 8,000 individuals, annually, including 350 new households in 2024. With up to 81 visitors in a single, 2-hour day in 2024, the pantry remains a crucial support system for asylum seekers, immigrants, English language learners, and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Dedicated volunteers power the Waterville Essentials Closet
Run by volunteers—many over the age of 75, along with their children and Colby College students—the pantry operates through generous donations, grants, local fundraisers, and a small budget from the church. Most supplies are purchased at discounted rates due to the pantry’s nonprofit status, though donations of feminine hygiene products, diapers, and adult diapers are always needed and appreciated.
Serving residents across Waterville and surrounding Kennebec County towns
The pantry primarily serves Waterville residents, along with individuals from Winslow, Oakland, and occasionally from surrounding towns such as Fairfield, Norridgewock, Skowhegan, and even as far as Bingham. Visitors provide their first and last name, city or town of residence, and household size. Those in Southern Kennebec are encouraged to seek support from Bridging the Gap, another valuable local resource.
Promoting health and well-being through essential hygiene supplies
In alignment with the Impact2032 initiative, the pantry actively promotes health and well-being for its clients, volunteers, and the broader community. Volunteers are provided with water to stay hydrated during shifts, and clients receive free dental hygiene products to support improved oral health. The pantry also ensures access to essential hygiene supplies and connects individuals with resources that promote healthy behaviors and preventive care.
Expanding outreach and connecting the community with essential resources
Looking ahead, the pantry continues to expand its outreach by distributing 211 resource materials, ensuring visitors are aware of additional community services. As it remains committed to its mission of care and support, the Waterville Basic Essentials Pantry continues to foster a healthier, more connected community for all.
