Impact2032 Highlight – Literacy Volunteers

In an effort to address the vision for financial stability, Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec (LVK) has expanded efforts around working with community partners to advance digital equity in Kennebec County.

Digital equity — individuals having equal access to digital tools and skills — has a direct and specific impact on financial stability. Community members need both digital equity and literacy in order to effectively participate in most current work environments as well as navigate the current financial landscape. Understanding how to effectively use online resources empowers individuals to make informed decisions, protect their financial assets, and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the digital economy, ultimately contributing to financial stability.

In 2023, LVK entered into a memorandum of understanding with GrowSmart Maine (GSM) to conduct research and prepare a written Digital Equity and Digital Inclusion Plan for Kennebec County. As part of this process, LVK actively engaged tutors and learners in completing surveys to evaluate the gaps in digital access in the area. The partnership submitted the plan to Maine Connectivity Authority and the plan contributed to a statewide Broadband Action Plan.

LVK’s current Digital Access Program was highlighted in this process as an effective approach to forwarding access to devices and skills. This program includes digital literacy education, information around the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) so individuals can access low-cost internet, and support from giveITgetIT, which provides access to free and low-cost devices for granting to learners, using as teaching tools, and supporting employment and housing searches for learners and other community members. This program also receives funding and support from GrowSmart Maine.
